Offida

OffidaThe town of Offida is located to the north east of Ascoli Piceno. The area has been inhabited from prehistoric times and the name derives from 'ofis' or 'serpent'.

The confluence of a number of valleys made Offida an important strategic town right from the start and attracted both the Piceni and Romans.

The medieval period left the town with many splendid buildings. Two should not be missed.

Palazzo Comunale, which houses the Museo Archeologico, dates from the 15th century and is full of original paintings decorating the interior, while the Church of 'S.Maria della Rocca' sits ominously on a hill frightening the peasants. It is a gem of Gothic Roman architecture and made designed from 'cotto toscana'. Do visit the crypt.

Offida is famous for the art of lace and you can visit the lace museum Museo del Merletto a tombolo,

There are many interesting festivals throughout the year in Offida. The most famous is the ritual of 'Lu bov fint' during Carnival. The event is a sort of burlesque show with pagan roots mixed with medieval festival traditions. It features a hapless ox and the procession of 'Velurd' when long bunches of straw are lit and carried through the streets to eventually form a large bonfire.

Also look out for:
