Montemonaco

It is very cold in Montemonaco in the winter. Located at 1080m above sea level at the heart of the Monte Sibillini mountain range and the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini, this small town of 800 people is rarely visited, especially in December.

But those who do go will be presented with one of the great panoramas of central Italy. It is also an authentic medieval village complete with towers and defensive walls and gives the visitor a real feel for what it must have been like all those years ago.

Legends still abound and include that of 'Sibilla'. She was queen of an underground paradise of limitless delights accessible only by a mythical cavern near the summit of the Monte Sibilla at 2175 meters.

Another myth surrounds nearby Lake Pilato named after the Roman Governor Pontius Pilate and sometimes known as Lago della Sibilla. His body is said to have been brought here and dumped into the lake following great efforts by a buffalo cart to reach this inaccessible spot.

There are fantastically located restaurants and accommodation at Montemonaco as you might expect and follow our 'Where to Stay' link on the left to view our recommendations. The food is at its best in the autumn once the harvest is over and the cold air builds up a great appetite.

Hand made cheese, salamis and polenta are popular as are funghi porcini and truffles. Rabbit, lamb and wild boar are also used to make thick sauces. Look out for the ravioli stuffed with chestnuts and the freshest of fresh trout.

Apart from that, wrap up well.
