Garfagnana near Lucca

Garfagnana from BargaThe territory of the Garfagnana is the inland northern slopes of the Apuan Alps in the province of Lucca in Tuscany. Once you have located the Serchio Valley and the river of the same name you can't go wrong.

It was an important zone for the via Francigena, the pilgrim road which took the faithful to Rome from northern Europe.

Do visit Barga to get an impression of the whole area, from the Apuan Alps to the lower valley.

Barga has also retained its medieval foundations, narrow streets, tiny squares and steep stairwells and has a rich and active cultural scene.

At the top is the 12th century cathedral with a fine panoramic view.

Bagni di Lucca is also famed for its thermal baths and it was here Italy's first casino was built , now the offices of the local comune.

The zone of La Garfagnana is known for its mushrooms (including the rare prugnoli primaverili) as well as roasts.

The Valle del Serchio also produces a 'farinata' which is half polenta and half minestrone.

For places to eat also consider the 'Osteria Vecchio Mulino' at Castelnuovo di Garfagnana.
