Eat Like a Hapsburg Captain

Here's an interesting idea proposed by the Antica Trattoria Schönburg at Malborghetto in the province of Udine. Their menu still contains the exact meal served to the captain who defended the town during the French siege in the Napoleonic Wars.

It was, in fact, a vegetable and spicy meat broth “zuppa del capitano” served inside a crispy bread that inspired the troops.

The trattoria dates from 1724 and in 1809 young captain Friedrich Hansel, in the service of the Hapsburg Francis I, walked in and had what turned out to be his last supper.

The trattoria also serves other specialties of the Valcanale such as bread gnocchi, ravioli with dried pears and potato 'cornetti'.

If you've seen the film 'The Duellists' by Ridley Scott you'll have an idea of what it must have been like.

Post Battle Recipe. The 'Antica Trattoria Schönberg' make another post battle recipe which is roast pork or 'Arrosto di Maiale' or for those German search engines: 'Schweinbrotn'.
