MILAN AND LOMBARDIA TRAVEL INFORMATION AND TOURISM SUGGESTIONS

The Gallic or Celtic tribes of the Po Valley were the first inhabitants of today's Lombardia to have left a long lasting mark.

Many of the region's towns and cities can trace their origins and names to this pre-Roman period e.g. Bergamo, Como, Milan or Mediolanum.

Roman Transpadana eventually gave way to the Gothic invasions of the 5th century AD, before the Longobards made their capital at Pavia to give us Longobardia.

All roads point to Milan these days but each of the minor centres is fantastically rich in art, history and culture.

Vigevano has one of the most beautiful squares of the whole Renaissance period, while Cremona gave us Stradivari and his violins.

Motor racing fans should head to Brescia, starting point of the annual Mille Miglia classic car race, and Mantova, birthplace of Tazio Nuvolari.

The north of the region is all lake and mountains. Como, Lecco, Cenobbio and Bellagio are the main centers on Lake Como. Lake d'Iseo is east of Bergamo and Sirmione sits on the west bank of Lake Garda where the towns of Salò and Gardone Riviera are also situated.
