Alto Monferrato Wine Route

Monferrato Wine Route in Piedmont Monferrato Wine Route in Piedmont

The Strada del Vino dell'Alto Monferrato e Terre del Gavi winds its way through the mountain communities of Alta Val Lemme-Alto Ovadese and Alta Valle Orba, Erro e Bormida in Piemonte.

The Wine Route has two main points of reference in this zone just south of Alessandria: the Ornithological Museum of Tagliolo and the public enoteca 'Bottega del Vino' in Cavatore.

It is actually a series of themed routes with each offering opportunities to visit wine estates, cheese farms and other typical product stops along the way.

Choose from the following routes: Castles, Sweet Land of Novi, Chestnuts & Mushrooms, Aromas, Villas and Cheese.

Looking at the Villas route as an example, the zone is full of old tenutas producing a range of wines such as Gavi DOCG, Dolcetto, Barbera and Cortese.

Gavi is the main stop with Bosolo, Mornese, Casaleggio Boiro, Montaldeo, Castelletto d'Orba, San Cristoforo, Parodi Ligure, Carrosolo, Voltaggio and Fraconato the other comune along the way.

The Wine Route of the Alto Monferrato boasts around 60 wine producers who sell directly to the public.

If you had to choose a time to go, then consider the last Sunday in November for the Novello Wine Festival and/or the final Sunday in August for the classic Festival of Wine and Grapes.

As for restaurants and trattoria we suggest heading to the towns of Fraconalto, Lerma, Taglio Monferrato, Cartosio, Molare and Ponzone.
