Classical Greek Theater of Siracusa

Each summer a series of inspiring plays, called 'Cycle of Classical Plays' are held inside the wonderful Greek Theatre of Siracusa or Teatro Greco di Siracusa.

Since 1914 L’Istituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico (National Intstitute of Ancient Drama) has annually performed Greek works at the Greek Theatre in Siracusa. Enjoy classic dramas performed in a modern way while also taking in one of the most infamous historical sites in Siracusa.

The National Institute for Ancient Drama are responsible for the content and choice of drama. The aim is to bring back to life the ancient heroes of the Greek and Roman tradition.

In the words of the organisers:

"When the last ray of sunlight caress the town, the curtain rises and on the wide stage of the Greek Theatre of Siracusa come on stage kings, warriors and fortune tellers to evoke their stories and their fights".

The Greek Theatre is a wide arena almost completely cut out from the bedrock and is perhaps the greatest monument to theatrical architecture in Italy.

But it not all high art. The international regatta between Malta and Siracusa takes place every year in July and is one of the oldest regattas in the Mediterranean.

This annual sailing competition began in 1948 and continues to grow every year with more tourists and citizens of Malta and Siracusa coming out to watch the race.

Siracusa, can easily be reached thanks to Catania International Airport, 37 miles from Siracusa away.
