Rustida di Pesce - Fish Festival, this city's origins date back to Roman times. It's the site of ancient taverns which later became famous inns during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period. The origins of this celebration of fish come from ancient roots where local folklore tells us that the sea began to offer less and less fish to the point that the very existence of the city's population became endangered. At this point the town fathers decided to offer fish to everyone as an appeal for help to the Madonna del Relitto (the protectoress of the city) and the danger passed. It was decided that from that moment on, fish would be cooked in the same, exact manner (with a hole dug in the sand and the lightly oiled fish pieces cooked on sticks) and offered for free to town residents and passers-by. The tradition has been faithfully carried on since those ancient times with the addition of countless, phenominal restaurants and hotels. This is truly a great place to take in the sun and relax! www.cattolica.info
