Annual Italy Events
- Jousting Tournament
- 25 Jul
- Traditional Folklore Festivals
The Giostra Cavalleresca di Sulmona was first referenced in a written decree from the year 1484 where the jousters were forbidden from betting on the outcome of their battles ( but folklore indicates that these lancing contests started much earlier). The seven neighborhoods and suburbs converge in the Piazza Maggiore of the ancient village to determine who will walk off with the biggest honor that the participants of the winning team can achieve in their lifetimes.
All jousters are clad in original armour and the streets and residents of the city are decorated in dress from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The actual tournaments follow strict schedules of elimination but the accompanying party that surrounds their honorly endeavors never stops and includes everything from plenty of food to excesses of drink, song and dance.
The event typically takes place in the last week of July - www.giostrasulmona.it

Annual Events in Italy
In this section we are compiling a list of Italy events which occur more or less on the same day on an annual basis.
They have been grouped by theme and behind each link is a description of the event, its location, as well as external links to help you plan further.
You can also find an event from the calendar below.
The list is by no means exhaustive, but they are events we know and recommend. With special thanks also to Dan Hostetler for giving us permission to adapt some of his original texts.
